Bergamot is a North American native plant which gained popularity in the 16th Century. It is a tropical plant that thrives just as well in Europe and is excellent for its medicinal, decorative, culinary, household and aromatic uses. It is named after a citrus fruit whose rind is used for extracting the Bergamot Essential Oil. It has a peppery and delicate flavour suggestive of a combination of sage and rosemary. The health benefits of Bergamot can be attributed to its properties and is often used as a lifestyle alternative in deodorant, as an antibiotic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, sedative, analgesic, antidepressant, or as a disinfectant. For a wonderful infusion of homemade Earl Grey Tea, just add the fresh leaves to China tea and enjoy!

Angelica is known for its use in alleviating heartburn, flatulence, anorexia, arthritis, circulation problems, respiratory catarrh, nervousness, plague, and insomnia. It is most commonly used in symptoms of depression, digestive discomforts, pain, acne, cancer, and to promote menstruation. Some sources praise its ability to repel mosquitoes and other insects. Lavender can be added to bathwater to treat circulation disorders and to relieve anxiety, and as an aromatic to relieve insomnia, pain, and agitation related to dementia. Neroli refers to the essential oil extracted from the flower petals of the bitter orange tree, Neroli (Citrus aurantium). It is one of the more precious of the essential oils because it takes a veritable boatload of these petals to make just a tiny vial of the essence. The health benefits of Neroli Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties as an antidepressant, aphrodisiac, antiseptic, bactericidal, cordial, carminative, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, disinfectant, antispasmodic, deodorant, digestive, emollient, sedative and tonic substance. Nigella damascena, also known as “Love-In-A-Mist”, is a beautiful bloom native to North Africa and Southern Europe. It is one of about twenty species of annual herbs from the Mediterranean region. Several species are cultivated in gardens, however Nigella Sativa, is grown for its aromatic seeds also known as “black seeds”.  Nigella, a diminutive of niger, or “black”, refers to the colour of the seeds. Damascena refers to Damascus, Syria, one of the places where this herb is at home. ”Love-in-a-mist” refers to the appearance of the flower in a nest of misty, threadlike foliage.

The seeds taste somewhat spicy (some people note a resemblance to nutmeg) and have been used as a condiment and in confectionery, to flavour wines and snuff, and as an expectorant. They are far less flavourful than those of Nigella sativa, known as black cumin or fennel flower, which has had a greater culinary and medicinal role than Nigella damascena.

Nigella damascena is closely related to Nigella sativa, which in India, Iran, and elsewhere in the Middle East is beloved at least as much for its culinary and medicinal purposes as for its ornamental value. The seeds are used in and on breads, like sesame seeds and poppy seeds. In India, where nigella seeds are called kalonji or onion seeds (for their appearance, not their flavour), they are briefly fried or toasted and added to pickles, chutneys, and sauces. The seeds are believed to ameliorate digestive, respiratory, rheumatic, and skin problems and some of these medicinal benefits have been scientifically confirmed.
